About Gamma Epsilon
Originally chartered on February 17, 1962, the Gamma Epsilon chapter of Tau Beta Sigma strived to further the University of Miami Bands program and to provide service to the greater community, until it was dissolved in 1969.
After its recharter on December 3, 1977, the members of this chapter now continue to assist with the Frost School of Music Band Programs, especially with the Frost Band of the Hour athletic bands.
Like our sister chapters, we will always provide service to our bands, encourage the advancement of the band profession, and promote and enrich an appreciation for band music through recognition, leadership, development, and the education of our members.
About the Gamma Epsilon Bands Programs
The University of Miami opened in the fall of 1926 with two academic programs: the Conservatory of Music and the College of Arts and Sciences. The Conservatory of Music was founded by Bertha M. Foster, who went on to become the University’s first music dean.
The Frost Band of the Hour was founded in 1933 by Walter E. Shaeffer, previous concertmaster of the United States Marine Band. In 1950, composer Henry Fillmore became a major patron of the band, providing it with the resources necessary for it to develop and grow into an official university program.
